What is Cognitive Delay in ASD/ADHD?
Cognitive delay is not the same as low intelligence. Many children with ASD have average or above-average IQ but show significant delays in specific Executive Functions (EF) governed by the prefrontal cortex. These are the brain's 'management skills' โ€” and they can be trained, supported, and strengthened with the right strategies.
Working Memory
Loses track mid-sentence; forgets multi-step instructions; loses belongings
Cognitive Flexibility
Rigid thinking; extreme distress at change; stuck on one topic
Inhibitory Control
Blurts out answers; interrupts; acts before thinking
Processing Speed
Slow to respond; needs repeated instructions; appears not to listen
Sustained Attention
Loses focus within 2โ€“5 min on non-preferred tasks
Planning & Organisation
Cannot start tasks; work appears chaotic; time-blind
Verbal Reasoning
Literal interpretation; misses inference and sarcasm; weak comprehension
Theory of Mind
Poor perspective-taking; social confusion; difficulty with collaborative tasks
๐Ÿ”„ ASD + ADHD Together โ€” What to Expect

50โ€“70% of autistic individuals also meet ADHD criteria. The combined profile is more complex than either alone โ€” but understanding it is the first step.

Attention
ASD: hyperfocused on interests ยท ADHD: easily distracted
Both extremes simultaneously โ€” hyperfocus on interest + complete inability to attend to anything else
Impulse Control
ASD: rigid but not impulsive ยท ADHD: high impulsivity
Impulsive within rigid rule systems โ€” creates explosive unpredictability
Language
ASD: concrete/literal/echolalic ยท ADHD: rapid, disorganised
Literal AND disorganised; poor narrative; difficulty inferring AND listening
Social
ASD: poor theory of mind ยท ADHD: socially motivated but awkward
Wants connection but cannot navigate social complexity โ€” deep social loneliness
